Jasprit Bumrah is not just the Man of the Match, but a treasure India has never seen before

“My individual assessment has always been my strength, and getting the Man-of-the-Match award at my home ground in a World Cup final, it doesn’t get better than that,” Said a dleighted Bumrah after picking up the player of the match award.

Jasprit Bumrah produced a clinical, career-best performance on Sunday night, claiming 4 for 15 to lead India to a historic T20 World Cup 2026 title. From being silenced at his home in the infamous 2023 final, to putting the halt; not just on the Kiwis, but all the oppositions India had to run through, in the tournament, Jasprit Bumrah stood tall in front of his home crowd, and etched his name as India's bowling great.

In front of over 86,000 screaming fans, Bumrah dismantled the Kiwi chase of 256, finishing the tournament with 14 wickets and overtaking Arshdeep Singh to become India's all-time leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cup history.

"I just tried to let the game come to me"

Speaking after being named Player of the Match, a reflective Bumrah noted how his mindset shifted throughout the tournament.

Feels extremely special because I’ve played one final in my home venue, but couldn’t win that one, but today I won. I was really motivated, I was really clear, I knew what I wanted to do. I knew wicket was a flat one, so I had to use all my experience. Before this tournament, I was in that zone where I felt I was trying too hard, because I was bowling well, but felt I was trying too hard. This tournament, I just tried to let the game come to me, and that worked really well.

Experience of the Ahmedabad "belter"

Bumrah’s spell was a masterclass in variation. He struck with his first delivery of the match; a 121kph slower cutter that induced a miscue from the dangerous Rachin Ravindra. He attributed his success to his intimate knowledge of the Ahmedabad surface.

Because I’ve played on belters over here, I have also seen the other team, how they were bowling... I have learnt over here when you are trying to bowl too fast, it gets easier. Shot making gets easier, sometimes the ball skids on [to the bat], so keep being smart, keep changing your pace and expect what the batsman is trying to do. So all of these things really help you and clarity while execution also helps.

Keeping heads above water

While Bumrah took the individual honors, he was quick to credit the collective composure of the bowling unit, including Axar Patel (3/27) and Hardik Pandya, for staying calm when the stakes were highest.

Whenever we discuss, they always come up with options. And when communication is needed, we did that. We never panicked. Kept our heads above the water. Teams that do that win the tournament and I am very happy we did it. Oh it was really wonderful, everybody is very clear. We always felt that we will keep our head above the water and try to hold our nerve, teams that do that win the tournament and we are very happy that we did it.
