Carrick’s Midas touch: United march on as Romero red card sinks Spurs

While Michael Carrick extended his perfect start as Manchester United boss to four wins from four, Thomas Frank’s tenure at Tottenham plummeted toward crisis.

A 2-0 victory for United, fueled by goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes, was defined by a moment of madness from Spurs captain Cristian Romero. Just days after a social media rant labelling the club’s injury-depleted depth as "disgraceful," Romero was sent off for a reckless lunge, leaving his side to play with ten men for over an hour.

The Romero meltdown: Passion or liability?

In the 29th minute, the match shifted irrevocably. Romero, who had been defended by Thomas Frank earlier in the week for his "passionate" outburst against the club hierarchy, lunged studs-up into Casemiro’s shin.

  • This was Romero’s sixth red card since his debut in 2021; more than any other player in the Premier League in that period.

  • Having already seen red once this season, Romero now faces a four-game suspension (three for violent conduct plus one for the repeat offense), further gutting a squad already decimated by injuries.

United’s coordination:

With a man advantage, United showed the purpose Carrick has instilled since replacing Ruben Amorim.

Carrick came in with the right ideas, giving the players the responsibility and freedom on the pitch. He knows what it means for this club to win
Bruno Fernandes, Manchester United Captain
  • A brilliantly worked corner routine saw Fernandes find Kobbie Mainoo, who teed up Bryan Mbeumo to slide-rule a finish into the far corner for his 10th goal of the season.

  • Diogo Dalot’s fizzed cross found Bruno Fernandes, who cleverly allowed the ball to bounce off his shin and past Guglielmo Vicario to seal the points.

The red card changed the momentum. Cuti [Romero] tried to go for the ball. You play with passion and aggression and there’s a fine line
Thomas Frank, Tottenham Manager
