Purva bags gold;  Sukant wins silver

Pune: City-shuttler Purva Barve and fellow Nikhil Kanetkar Badminton Academy (NKBA) trainee Sukant Kadam ended with mixed luck in their second successive finals within a month this weekend.

Purva topped the women’s singles winning the Cyprus Junior 2018 at Nicosia, Cyprus, while Sukant settled for silver in the men’s singles SL4 event and bagged bronze in the doubles event along with Umesh Kumar at the 1st Fazza Dubai Para Badminton International 2018.

At Nicosia, Purva seeded No. 4 ousted Vietnam player Thi Anh Thu Vu 21-13, 21-9 in a 30-minute dual to annex her second title of the year. Incidentally, the win was the World No. 19 second back-to-back title winning feat. In 2017 she bagged Italian Junior International and Israel Junior titles respectively.

Round 2: bt Maria Kuse (Germany) 21-12, 21-5.

Final: lost to 1--Lucas Mazur (France) 16-21, 18-21.
Semi-final: bt 4-Bakri Omar (Malaysia) 21-13, 21-15.
Quarterfinal: bt Sedat Tuemkaya (Turkey) 21-15, 21-13.
