R Ashwin in talks to make history as first Indian male star in BBL

"To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer."

Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin is reportedly in talks to join the Big Bash League (BBL), a move that would make him the first high-profile Indian cricketer to feature in Australia's premier T20 league. According to a report by Cricbuzz, the discussions were initiated by Cricket Australia (CA) CEO Todd Greenberg, who reached out to Ashwin shortly after he announced his retirement from the IPL. This potential acquisition is seen as a significant boost for the BBL and the Australian cricket summer.

Greenberg confirmed the discussions, telling Cricbuzz, "To get someone with Ashwin’s credentials to come over here for the BBL will be great at so many levels. He’s a champion cricketer who will bring a lot to the Big Bash and to our cricket summer." Greenberg is said to be "quietly confident" that a deal will materialize. While the specifics are still being worked out, including which of the eight clubs Ashwin might join and his availability for matches, sources suggest he could be heading to Melbourne if a deal is finalized.

The potential signing is a major step for the BBL, which has long faced the stigma of not attracting the biggest overseas stars. The involvement of an elite Indian cricketer of Ashwin's stature, with his millions of followers, is expected to be a massive draw for the league, significantly boosting its global audience, particularly in South Asia. This move aligns with CA's stated ambition to see the BBL compete with the best T20 leagues in the world, including the IPL.

The deal could also serve as a "monumental pivot point" for Australian cricket, potentially paving the way for private investment in BBL clubs, as recommended by a recent independent report. The presence of a player like Ashwin could greatly enhance the league's standing for prospective investors. While former Indian wicket-keeper Dinesh Karthik has played in the SA20, Ashwin's stature in the international game makes his potential BBL move a "pioneering journey."

Beyond his playing role, Ashwin has also reportedly expressed interest in coaching and broadcasting. He is keen to hone his coaching skills and might also pursue media opportunities, leveraging his reputation as a content creator. His potential involvement in the BBL and the International League T20 (ILT20) would mark the beginning of his "explorer's journey" across various franchise leagues, a path less traveled by top-tier Indian cricketers who have traditionally been exclusive to the IPL.
