The match began with an immediate setback for Real Madrid, as new signing Trent Alexander-Arnold was forced off with a suspected hamstring injury just five minutes into his Champions League debut. His replacement, Dani Carvajal, then compounded the team's difficulties when he was shown a straight red card in the 72nd minute for headbutting Marseille goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli during an altercation.

Marseille took the lead in the 22nd minute after a defensive error by Arda Güler was capitalized on by Mason Greenwood, who set up Timothy Weah for the opening goal. However, their lead was short-lived. Mbappé converted his first penalty six minutes later after Rodrygo was fouled in the box by Geoffrey Kondogbia.

Even with 10 men, Real Madrid's determination paid off. In the 81st minute, they were awarded a second penalty when Vinicius Jr's run into the box resulted in a handball by defender Facundo Medina. Mbappé stepped up again and confidently scored, giving his side the lead and ultimately sealing the victory.

This hard-fought win allows Xabi Alonso's side to start their Champions League season on a strong note after a disappointing quarterfinal exit last season. The team showed resilience in a game marred by injury and a red card, which will be a crucial test of their mettle as they aim to reclaim the European crown. Their next Champions League match is away against Kairat on September 30.
