Sanju Samson’s transformation from a squad auxiliary to the heartbeat of India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph reached its pinnacle on Sunday, as he was named Player of the Tournament. Finishing with 321 runs at a staggering strike rate of 199.37, Samson’s tournament was defined by a historic run of three consecutive 80-plus scores in the knockout stages.
Speaking during the post-match presentation in Ahmedabad, a visibly moved Samson revealed that his "surreal" success was rooted in a decision to reach out to cricketing icon Sachin Tendulkar during one of the lowest points of his career.
Samson shared that the seeds of his current form were sown when he was left out of the playing XI during India’s tour of Australia. Feeling the weight of missed opportunities, he turned to "The Master Blaster" for psychological reinforcement.
I was sitting outside in Australia, I was not playing a game, so I thought, OK, what is the mindset required of now? So I reached out to sir, and I had huge, huge, big conversations with him. Even yesterday [Saturday] night, he called me up to check how I am feeling. Getting guidance from someone like him; that clarity, game preparation, awareness, and game sense, what more can I ask for? I think I’m very grateful for everyone who supported me.Sanju Samson
Total runs: 321 (3rd highest in the tournament)
Strike rate: 199.37
Knockout scores: 97* (vs. West Indies), 89 (vs. England), 89 (vs. New Zealand)
Milestone: First player in history to score three consecutive 80+ scores in T20 World Cup knockouts.
Samson’s journey to the Ahmedabad final was far from a straight line. He admitted to feeling "broke" and "completely out of his mind" following a disastrous five-match series against New Zealand prior to the World Cup, where he managed just 46 runs.
Right after the New Zealand series, I was broken, I was completely out of my mind. I was like, OK, my dreams have shattered, what else can I do? But God had different plans. I suddenly came back into the crucial games, and I did what I could for my country. So I’m very proud and very happy that I was courageous enough to dream about it, and actually, things have turned up so nicely for me, so I’m very grateful.Sanju Samson
While the world saw the results in 2026, Samson revealed that the visualization of this moment began in the West Indies during the 2024 T20 World Cup, where he was a non-playing member of the title-winning squad.
I think this started 1-2 years before, when I was with the 2024 World Cup-winning team in West Indies. I couldn’t play a game but I kept on visualising, I kept on dreaming, I kept on working. This is exactly what I wanted to do then. I thought I needed to put in so much of work, and this is exactly what I wanted to achieve. And by God’s grace, I think today, things have turned around.Sanju Samson
As the celebration continued under the Ahmedabad lights, Samson took a moment to absorb the magnitude of his achievement. "I'm just going through it. It feels a bit surreal," he concluded. "This itself is very big for me, I need to enjoy it right now."
