In a remarkable display of commitment, Indian cricket star Sanju Samson played for the Kochi Blue Tigers in their opening Kerala Cricket League (KCL) 2025 match on Thursday despite being unwell with a fever and a cough. The wicketkeeper-batsman travelled directly from a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram to the Greenfield Stadium to participate in the game against the Trivandrum Royals, showcasing immense dedication to his new franchise.

According to reports, Samson was admitted to a local hospital on Thursday afternoon where he received primary medical care, including intravenous saline. After his initial treatment, he left for the stadium to join his team. During the match, Samson took to the field for the entire first innings but did not come out to bat during the run chase. Following the conclusion of the game, he immediately returned to the hospital for further observation before eventually being discharged and sent home to rest.

Despite his health concerns, Samson's presence seemed to inspire his team. The Kochi Blue Tigers, captained by his elder brother Saly Samson, successfully chased down a target of 98 runs to begin their campaign with a victory. Saly led from the front with a match-winning unbeaten half-century. Sanju's decision to play, even in a limited capacity, was a significant gesture, especially after being acquired by the Kochi franchise for a record-breaking price in the KCL auction.

A source close to the cricketer confirmed his condition, "Sanju has fever and he also has a cough. His health is currently not well, but he is recovering and resting. He was at the hospital on Friday, and now he is at home." The situation requires precaution, as Samson is a crucial part of the Indian squad for the upcoming Asia Cup 2025 and is expected to leave for national duty midway through the KCL season.

While he is currently recuperating, the 31-year-old star is reportedly expected to be available for the Kochi Blue Tigers' next fixture scheduled for Saturday, August 23. Team management will be closely monitoring his recovery, balancing his commitment to the league with the importance of his fitness for his international assignments with Team India in the coming weeks.
