3 goals and 4 lungs: Is Federico Valverde, the "most underrated player on the planet"?

Valverde became the second player in history to score a first-half hat-trick against an English opponent in the competition, matching Lionel Messi's 2010 record.

In a night of pure European sorcery at the Santiago Bernabeu, Federico Valverde transcended his reputation as Real Madrid’s "utility man" to produce one of the greatest individual displays in Champions League history. Wearing the captain’s armband and in the absence of Kylian Mbappe and Jude Bellingham, the 27-year-old Uruguayan dismantled Manchester City with a sensational 42-minute hat-trick, securing a 3-0 first-leg lead for the 15-time champions.

Before Wednesday night, Valverde had not scored in 26 consecutive Champions League games. By half-time, he had joined Lionel Messi as only the second player in history to score a first-half hat-trick against an English opponent in the competition.

42 minutes of madness: How the goals fell

Valverde’s evening was a a journey of sheer imagination, starting from a tactical foundation at right-back before exploding into a midfield masterclass.

  1. Opener (5th minute): Exploiting City’s high press, Thibaut Courtois launched a stunning diagonal to the wing. Valverde controlled the ball on the bounce, guided it past Nico O’Reilly, and bypassed Gianluigi Donnarumma to open the scoring.

  2. Second (27th minute): Moving centrally, Valverde took a pass in his stride with his right foot and unleashed a clinical strike with his left that left the City defense overcome by a well-known sensation.

  3. Hat-trick (42nd minute): The most spectacular of the lot. Following a scooped ball from Brahim Diaz, Valverde nudged the ball over City defender Marc Guéhi before lashing a volley past Donnarumma.

"The most underrated Footballer on the planet"

The reaction from the stands; where an injured Jude Bellingham stood gaping and Kylian Mbappe jumped over seats to applaud, mirrored the awe felt by those on the pitch.

I’ve said even as a Liverpool player I have admired him. He is undoubtedly the most underrated footballer on the planet. When you play with him you understand how much he gives to the team. He covers every blade of grass, he gives his all. As a player, the best attribute you can have is that your team-mates can always count on you.

This shows that we are Real Madrid and you should never give us up for dead. He is a ‘21st century Juanito’... It was a magical night.

Sacrifice born from dirt pitches

Following the match, the "Man of the Match" remained characteristically humble, citing his tough upbringing in Montevideo as the source of his tireless work rate.

It was a really good game and I feel very good. Personally, I think I played well and it was a solid performance. I always try and give the best of myself and do what the coach asks... for me, that’s key.

Night to remember

  • Messi parallel: Valverde is the first player since Lionel Messi in 2010 (vs. Arsenal) to score a first-half hat-trick against English opposition in the CL.

  • Drought ends: These were Valverde’s first Champions League goals since April 9, 2024, also against Manchester City.

  • Versatility: Despite starting the season covering for injuries at right-back, Valverde’s transition into a "7, 8, 9, and 10" all at once defined the win.

  • Record: He is only the second midfielder in Real Madrid history to score a European Cup hat-trick, joining honorary president "Pirri."

Looking ahead to the Etihad

While Real Madrid have a foot in the quarter-finals, the clean sheet secured by Valverde’s late-game defensive tracking is just as vital as his goals. With Mbappé and Bellingham nearing fitness, Los Blancos head to Manchester with their captain having set an impossible standard.
