Amazon has laid off employees in its Artificial General Intelligence (AGI) division, marking another round of workforce reductions as the company continues to reorganise its AI operations.

The company has not disclosed the number of employees affected. According to reports, the layoffs impacted teams within the AGI Data Services unit, led by Vice President Adeeb Shanaa, and the AGI Information team, headed by Vice President Vishal Sharma.

Confirming the move, an Amazon spokesperson told Reuters that the company remains committed to developing large AI models but is refining its focus on projects considered most important for customers. The spokesperson said the restructuring required "difficult decisions," including the elimination of some roles within the AGI organisation.

The layoffs follow broader organisational changes within Amazon's AI business. In December, the company reorganised its AGI division, placing it under Senior Vice President Peter DeSantis alongside its silicon chip and quantum computing teams. The unit has also seen senior leadership changes over the past year, including the departures of executives Rohit Prasad and David Luan.

The latest cuts come months after Amazon eliminated more than 16,000 jobs across multiple business units earlier this year. The company continues to invest in artificial intelligence while restructuring parts of its workforce to align with its strategic priorities.
