Apple Adds Built-In Ring Light to Macs with macOS 26.2 Beta

Apple’s new Edge Lighting feature uses the Neural Engine to dynamically adjust on-screen illumination, delivering studio-style lighting for video calls on macOS.

The ring light is now coming to your Mac, no need to hassle with external lighting setups. Apple is testing a new feature in the macOS Tahoe 26.2 beta that could make video calls look brighter and more professional. Called Edge Light, the feature creates a glowing border around your Mac’s display, acting as a virtual ring light for FaceTime, Zoom, and other video apps.

Utilizing Apple's Neural Engine, Edge Light identifies your facial features, dimensions, and placement within the frame, automatically modifying the lighting to ensure consistent illumination. The Image Signal Processor enhances brightness by considering the surrounding light, providing a responsive experience that adapts to your surroundings.

Additionally, users have the option to adjust the color temperature, from warm to cool shades—similar to a professional LED ring light. Despite its bright border, Edge Lighting won’t interfere with your screen. It sits atop your desktop and windows but fades away when the cursor approaches the edge of the display. It also won’t appear in screenshots or cover the top menu bar.

When macOS 26.2 launches publicly in December, all Apple Silicon Macs will support Edge Light. Macs released in 2024 or later will even gain an automatic mode that turns on the lighting in low-light conditions.

The feature is also compatible with Studio Display and external cameras connected to Apple Silicon-powered Macs.Developers can try out Edge Light now through the macOS 26.2 beta program.
