OpenAI intends to modify the financial accessibility of ChatGPT for users. Nick Turley, the Head of ChatGPT, mentioned that the AI company might phase out its unlimited subscription plans over time. His concepts are influenced by Sam Altman's vision, who envisions intelligence being treated as a utility in the future, akin to electricity and water.

OpenAI CEO Sam Altman has previously faced criticism for suggesting that intelligence should be treated as a utility, where users pay for access as needed, similar to essential services like power or water.

Nick Turley drew a parallel between unlimited AI subscriptions and the idea of unlimited electricity, arguing on the Bg2 podcast that such a model may no longer be viable in the current landscape. “Having an unlimited plan today is like having unlimited electricity, it just doesn’t make sense,” he said.

The cost structure for the most effective ChatGPT subscription has remained the same since its introduction in 2024. Turley suggests that as technology advances, pricing in various sectors tends to shift, implying that AI should follow suit. He stated, 'There's no scenario where pricing doesn't undergo significant changes when technology is advancing at such a rapid pace.' Turley emphasized that OpenAI will maintain its free tier to ensure accessibility for many users. However, he acknowledged that the paid subscriptions for the AI model might soon experience a substantial increase.

OpenAI isn't the only company considering increasing the prices of AI models. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella also suggested a similar move, indicating that Microsoft might plan to charge clients on a per-agent basis.
