Anthropic’s Claude AI experienced a major global outage on June 2, 2026, disrupting access across its web platform, mobile application, API, and developer tools. The company confirmed elevated error rates as users worldwide began reporting issues on outage-tracking platform DownDetector around 2:19 AM ET.
According to Anthropic’s official status updates, several Claude services were affected and engineers were immediately deployed to investigate and resolve the issue. The company first acknowledged elevated error rates before confirming that the root cause had been identified and mitigation measures were underway.
The disruption was linked to a technical bug in Claude Code, Anthropic’s AI coding tool. A malfunction in its sub-agent system, designed to break tasks into smaller parallel processes, caused uncontrolled looping and excessive duplication of processes, leading to unusually high token consumption and system overload.
Users reported that while the interface appeared functional, prompts failed to generate responses, often showing messages like “A bit longer, thanks for your patience.” This created a perception of normal operation while the system was effectively stalled.
Over 200 complaints were reported in India alone, with most issues affecting Claude Chat, followed by the mobile app and Claude Code. Anthropic has since rolled out an emergency quota reset for affected users and said it is working on a permanent fix to restore full service stability.
