FSSAI Issues Notices to Nestle, KFC and Flipkart Over Alleged Hygiene Violations

Food safety regulator flags major brands for lapses, seeks explanation on compliance with hygiene norms

According to sources, the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has sent separate notices to Nestle India, KFC India, and Flipkart over alleged hygiene-related violations.

According to a source, FSSAI launched suo motu proceedings after numerous social media posts drew attention to the matter. One user alleged that a packet of Maggi noodles was contaminated.

Additional accusations were made, including claims that insects were discovered in a product delivered via a Flipkart Minutes order and that unhygienic conditions were observed at a KFC outlet in Andhra Pradesh.

On Friday, Nestle India refuted claims that insects were found in its MAGGI noodles, after a news agency reported that India’s food regulator had acknowledged social media complaints and sent a notice to the consumer goods company.

Nestle India stated that the issue originated from an unverified social media account, and that the account holder did not respond despite multiple requests to provide a sample.

The company further stated that testing of a reference sample from the same batch, carried out at an independent laboratory appointed by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), showed no signs of infestation.

Flipkart Minutes has already engaged the concerned vendor and completed a root-cause investigation. A source familiar with the matter said that the conclusions of this review were included in its response to the FSSAI notice received a few days earlier.
