Google is expanding its AI-powered search capabilities to YouTube, introducing a new experimental feature called “Ask YouTube” as part of its broader artificial intelligence push across Search and related services. The tool is currently being tested with select YouTube Premium users in the United States.
The feature aims to make YouTube search more conversational and context-sensitive. Rather than displaying only a list of video results, it allows users to ask questions in natural language and receive detailed, structured responses. Depending on the query, these answers may include a mix of long-form videos, YouTube Shorts, and brief explanatory text.
YouTube says the system can now process more complex, multi-step queries. For instance, someone planning a trip could get a detailed, step-by-step itinerary instead of a series of unrelated video recommendations. The tool also allows follow-up questions, adjusting its responses based on the earlier context within the same search session.
The experience is powered by Google’s broader AI Mode, which is designed to offer more guided and interactive search results compared to traditional keyword-based search or standard AI previews. Unlike basic search listings, AI Mode focuses on understanding intent and delivering more personalised, multi-format responses.
The feature remains in early testing, and Google has acknowledged that results may not always be fully accurate as the system evolves. The company says it plans to refine the experience further and gradually expand access beyond Premium users as part of its wider shift toward more assistant-like, AI-driven search tools across platforms.
