In the midst of the Anthropic controversy row, following its lawsuit against the United States Department of Defense, nearly 40 AI researchers have allegedly united to back Anthropic through a supportive legal brief. Among the executives reportedly supporting Anthropic is Jeff Dean, Google's chief scientist and Gemini lead. This action was taken after the American AI company was designated as a 'supply chain risk' by the Trump administration.

As reported by The Verge, numerous AI engineers, among them individuals from Google and OpenAI, have filed an amicus brief in a personal capacity. They highlighted that the classification assigned to Anthropic could pose major issues regarding the future of advanced AI technologies, especially in relation to law enforcement and national security.

The recent controversy surrounding AI began when Anthropic declined to permit two particular military uses of its technology in an agreement with the Trump administration. Furthermore, the report highlights that the San Francisco-based AI firm established strict ethical limits against employing its systems for extensive domestic surveillance and the deployment of autonomous weapons capable of lethal force.

The publication states that the Trump administration labeled the tech giant as a supply chain risk. This designation is usually given to foreign firms deemed a possible threat to national security. As a result, the companies are reportedly barred from defense contracts, and other contractors are discouraged from using Anthropic's services if they wish to maintain future collaborations with the Pentagon.

Despite Anthropic being reportedly identified as a supply chain risk, its AI assistant Claude has already been utilized in certain defense-related operations by the Pentagon. A media report suggests that AI specialists believe the actions taken by the Trump administration could be perceived as retaliation against a company aiming to enforce responsible limitations on the use of its technology.
