Gujarat has taken a historic step by launching India’s first-ever Tribal Genome Project, designed to study the genetic makeup of tribal populations to address and mitigate inherited diseases. India is home to over 104 million tribal people, constituting about 8.6% of the population, with many residing in remote and underserved areas. These communities have unique genetic profiles shaped by centuries of geographic and social isolation. However, limited access to healthcare and inadequate genetic research has often left tribal populations vulnerable to inherited diseases and health complications.
The Tribal Genome Project, conceptualized by the Government of Gujarat, attempts to bridge this knowledge gap by harnessing the power of genomic science in public health. By mapping the DNA of tribal groups within Gujarat, the project seeks to:
