Reliance Jio has made a significant leap in India's 5G landscape by launching ultra-fast mmWave 5G services in the 26 GHz band across 21 states and union territories. This rollout marks a major milestone in Jio's strategy to provide high-speed, low-latency connectivity, primarily targeting enterprise applications where specialized network requirements are crucial.

TBC's Insider: States and UTs Covered

The mmWave 5G services are now available in the following regions:

  • North India: Delhi, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Jammu & Kashmir, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar

  • West India: Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra

  • South India: Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana

  • East & Northeast India: West Bengal, Odisha, Assam, Tripura, Nagaland, Madhya Pradesh

mmWave 5G operates at higher frequencies (26 GHz) than conventional mobile networks, offering ultra-fast data transmission and extremely low latency. However, its range is limited, requiring a denser network infrastructure for effective coverage. This makes it more suitable for specialized applications rather than widespread consumer use.

Know With TBC: Enterprise Focus

Jio's mmWave rollout is primarily aimed at enterprise-level applications, such as:

  • Smart Factories: High-speed connectivity for industrial automation.

  • Remote Surgeries: Real-time data transmission for medical procedures.

  • High-Frequency Trading: Ultra-low latency for financial transactions.

For the average consumer, Jio's 5G services in the 3.3 GHz band remain the primary choice for mobile browsing and streaming. While mmWave offers superior speeds, its limited coverage and higher infrastructure costs mean it is not yet marketed for mass adoption.
