Meta CTO to Unhappy Employees: "You Should Quit"

Internal Tensions Flare as Meta Faces Employee Revolt

Pragati Chougule

Meta's Chief Technology Officer, Andrew Bosworth, has ignited controversy within the company by telling employees who are unhappy with recent policy changes to "consider working elsewhere". The blunt message, delivered in an internal forum, highlights growing tensions between Meta's leadership and its workforce over issues ranging from diversity and inclusion to freedom of speech.

"Disagree and Commit" Or Exit, Says Bosworth

The incident unfolded within Meta's internal Workplace forum, specifically in a group called "Let's Fix Meta". Employees voiced concerns over recent policy shifts, including cuts to data-backed DEI programs, restrictions on internal free speech, and the handling of content moderation. One employee criticised the inability to discuss or appeal policy decisions, prompting Bosworth to respond, "You should quit if you feel that way, I mean it,". He emphasised the need for employees to either support the company's direction or seek employment elsewhere.

Leaked All-Hands Meeting Adds Fuel to the Fire

The controversy intensified following the leak of CEO Mark Zuckerberg's comments from an all-hands meeting. Bosworth expressed disappointment over the leaks, arguing that they justified the company's decision to change the format of Q&A sessions. Meta has since limited the types of questions employees can ask, a move perceived by some as stifling open dialogue.

DEI and Free Speech at the Heart of the Conflict

A key point of contention revolves around Meta's perceived retreat from DEI initiatives and its handling of content moderation. Some employees have voiced concerns about the company's approach to transphobic and homophobic content, the removal of posts critical of leadership on Workplace, and the broader implications for free speech within the company. Meta has also been cutting "low-performers" to make room for new AI-focused hires.

Ambitious AI Plans and a Changing Landscape

Meta's internal struggles reflect a broader trend in the tech industry, where major firms are facing increasing pressure to reverse progressive initiatives. As companies navigate a rapidly changing political and regulatory landscape, they are grappling with how to balance employee concerns with business priorities.

While Meta has not officially commented on Bosworth's remarks, the company's actions suggest a firm commitment to its chosen direction. This includes prioritising efficiency, investing heavily in AI, and adapting to evolving legal and political realities, even if it means internal friction.
