OnePlus, the brand that once shook up the smartphone market with bold launches and a devoted fan base, appeared to be heading into uncertain territory. Earlier this week, reports suggested that OnePlus India could be shut down by its parent company, OPPO.
However, fresh clarification from OnePlus India has shifted the narrative. After days of speculation, the company’s leadership publicly denied the shutdown claims, stating that operations in the country are continuing as normal.
The reaction follows an in-depth report by Android Headlines, which highlighted reduced teams, declining shipments, and canceled products as indicators that OnePlus might be discreetly phased out within OPPO. This report raised alarm among users and retailers, particularly in India.
Nevertheless, OnePlus India has provided an explanation regarding the report on dismantling. In a social media post, OnePlus CEO Robin Liu said: "I wanted to address some misinformation that has been circulating about OnePlus India and its operations. We’re operating as usual and will continue to do so. Never Settle."
This isn't the first instance of an internal change at OnePlus. A few years back, the company integrated sections of its design and research teams with its parent company, Oppo, as part of a broader restructuring in 2021. At that time, OnePlus stated that this step would allow it to share resources and accelerate product development, while still functioning as an independent brand. This previous change, which received mixed feedback from fans, is now being remembered as another indication of how OnePlus' future is increasingly linked to Oppo's decisions.
According to the Android Headlines report, OnePlus had scrapped the OnePlus Open 2 foldable and the OnePlus 15s compact flagship, signalling a possible end for the brand. OnePlus built a loyal fan base since its 2014 debut, but recent reports suggested that Oppo may phase it out after current models stop receiving support. The claims have raised serious doubts about the brand’s future. However, OnePlus CEO has cleared the air about this.
