OpenAI has announced significant updates to its Advanced Voice Mode for ChatGPT, enhancing the AI voice assistant's ability to engage in natural conversations. The improvements, unveiled on March 25, 2025, aim to make the assistant more personable and less intrusive during interactions. According to Manuka Stratta, a post-training researcher at OpenAI, the updated model now features a more engaging personality and is designed to interrupt users less frequently, allowing for smoother dialogues.

The revamped Advanced Voice Mode addresses a common frustration with AI voice assistants: interruptions during pauses for thought or breath. Free users of ChatGPT can now enjoy this enhanced experience, which allows them to pause without being interrupted while speaking. Subscribers of paid tiers—including Plus, Teams, Edu, Business, and Pro—will also benefit from a more direct and concise communication style from the voice assistant.

These updates come as competition in the AI voice assistant market intensifies, with emerging players like Sesame AI gaining traction for their lifelike voice assistants. Major companies such as Amazon are also advancing their own AI technologies, preparing to launch updated versions of their voice assistants.

With these enhancements, OpenAI aims to improve user experience significantly and position ChatGPT as a leading AI voice assistant in a rapidly evolving landscape.
