Reduced Screen Time, Better Sleep: The Pet Effect on Modern Indians

How Pet Companionship Is Transforming Digital Habits and Wellness in Urban India

Pragati Chougule

In the fast-paced, digitally saturated lives of modern Indians, a surprising trend is emerging: pet ownership is helping people cut down on screen time and sleep better. As urban professionals and families increasingly welcome dogs, cats, and other animals into their homes, they are discovering that the presence of a pet can offer a natural antidote to technology overload and poor sleep hygiene.

India’s urban centers are among the most digitally connected in the world, with smartphones and streaming services dominating leisure time. However, surveys and anecdotal evidence suggest that pet owners are spending significantly less time glued to their devices.

Pets, especially dogs, require daily walks, playtime, and attention. This physical engagement naturally limits the hours available for scrolling through social media or binge-watching TV. Interacting with pets encourages mindfulness and being present in the moment, reducing the urge to multitask with gadgets.

The unpredictable and spontaneous nature of pets; whether it’s a cat demanding attention or a dog nudging for a walk often interrupts prolonged screen sessions, prompting owners to take breaks.

Petting or cuddling animals triggers the release of oxytocin, the “love hormone,” which helps lower stress and anxiety—two major culprits behind insomnia. Pets thrive on routine, and their need for regular feeding and exercise helps owners establish healthier daily schedules, including consistent bedtimes. Increased activity during the day, such as walking a dog, leads to natural physical tiredness, making it easier to fall asleep at night.

While the benefits are clear, experts caution that pet ownership is a long-term commitment. Prospective owners should consider their lifestyle, work hours, and ability to provide care. Urban housing restrictions and the cost of pet care can also be barriers for some.
