Uber Reintroduces Chief Operating Officer Role as CEO Loosens Grip

Uber has reinstated the Chief Operating Officer (COO) position, signaling a shift in leadership dynamics as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi loosens his grip on daily operations.

Uber Technologies Inc. has announced the reintroduction of the Chief Operating Officer (COO) role, a move that marks a strategic shift in the company’s management structure. This decision comes as CEO Dara Khosrowshahi signals a willingness to delegate more operational control, aiming to streamline decision-making and accelerate Uber’s global growth ambitions.

Uber previously eliminated the COO role in 2019, with Khosrowshahi consolidating operational oversight under his direct leadership. The company cited a need for simplified reporting lines and faster execution during a period of rapid change and restructuring. However, as Uber has matured and expanded into new markets and services, the demands on its executive team have grown more complex.

The reinstated COO will be tasked with overseeing Uber’s core ride-hailing business, food delivery (Uber Eats), freight, and emerging mobility ventures. The position is expected to serve as a crucial bridge between the company’s global operations and its executive leadership, ensuring alignment and agility across regions.

According to company insiders, Khosrowshahi’s decision to loosen his grip on day-to-day operations reflects both confidence in Uber’s leadership bench and recognition of the scale and diversity of the company’s business. By empowering a COO, Uber aims to:

  • Streamline processes and improve coordination across business units and geographies.

  • Free up the CEO to focus on long-term strategy, partnerships, and new growth opportunities.

  • Provide clear leadership for operational teams, enabling faster response to market changes and customer needs.

Khosrowshahi commented, “As Uber continues to evolve, it’s critical that we have the right structure in place to support our teams and deliver for our customers worldwide. The COO will play a key role in driving our next phase of growth.”

Uber’s move mirrors a broader trend among major tech companies, many of which have revisited the COO role to balance visionary leadership with operational excellence. Rivals like Lyft, DoorDash, and Airbnb have all made similar adjustments, recognizing the importance of strong operational management in today’s fast-paced, competitive landscape.

Analysts suggest that the reintroduction of the COO could also help Uber navigate regulatory challenges, manage costs, and pursue profitability in an industry facing increasing scrutiny and shifting consumer expectations.

Uber has launched an executive search for the new COO, seeking a leader with deep operational expertise, global experience, and a track record of scaling complex businesses. The appointment is expected to be finalized in the coming months.

In the meantime, the company remains focused on expanding its mobility and delivery services, investing in autonomous vehicle technology, and exploring new revenue streams such as advertising and subscription models.
