But it was only in 2014 that the United Nations declared June 21 as International Yoga Day, following a proposal by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. This year, the main event took place in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, with Prime Minister Modi leading the morning yoga protocol on the serene RK Beach. Over 2 crore participants across India joined in simultaneously, as part of the “Yoga for All” national campaign.

The energy was palpable. School children, senior citizens, government officials, influencers, and tourists all flowed through asanas in unison, proving once again that yoga knows no age, gender, or geography.
