Pune: The number of Guillain-Barre Syndrome (GBS) cases in Maharashtra has seen a sharp rise, with 10 new cases reported, pushing the total count to 140. Additionally, three more deaths have been recorded—two in Pune and one in Pimpri-Chinchwad—taking the total GBS-related fatalities in the state to five.
The syndrome, which affects the nervous system and can cause paralysis, has now spread to multiple districts, including Nagpur, Solapur, Kolhapur, and Sangli. Maharashtra’s health department has issued strict guidelines for districts to follow in an attempt to control the situation.
Three Deaths in Two Days
The latest fatalities include a 60-year-old man who was undergoing treatment at Poona Hospital. He passed away on Friday (January 31) morning due to complications arising from GBS. Another patient, a 65-year-old man admitted to Sassoon General Hospital, also lost his life while receiving treatment. He was a resident of Nanded.
In Pimpri-Chinchwad, a 36-year-old man from the Pimpri-Gurav area, who was admitted to the ICU at Yashwantrao Chavan Memorial Hospital, also succumbed to the illness. The patient had developed pneumonia, which led to respiratory distress, ultimately causing his death.
Health Department Issues Guidelines Amid Growing Concerns
With GBS cases rising rapidly in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad, authorities are on high alert. The state’s first GBS-related death was recorded in Solapur. Subsequently, a 56-year-old woman lost her life at Sassoon General Hospital.
Now, with three more deaths in Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad within just two days, the GBS death toll in Maharashtra has climbed to five. The state health department has made it mandatory for all districts to implement its issued guidelines to prevent further cases and fatalities.
