Pune, 14th August 2026: Maharashtra is expected to get Rainfall for the next four days, until Monday, August 17. Mumbai and most parts of Konkan, Vidarbha and Khandesh, along with Nashik, Pune, Satara, Sangli, Kolhapur and Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, are likely to receive moderate to heavy rain at several places.
The remaining parts of Marathwada, along with Solapur and some adjoining areas, are expected to receive only isolated light showers.
The increase in rainfall activity is linked to favourable atmospheric conditions over the region. The monsoon trough is currently positioned differently from its normal location, with its western end lying farther north and its eastern end extending southward.
It is currently extending from the Firozpur-Muzaffarnagar-Barabanki-Dehri region towards the northwest Bay of Bengal.
Another important factor is a vertical wind shear zone, where winds at different levels of the atmosphere move in different directions. This zone is extending from east to west around 22 degrees north latitude, covering parts of northern Maharashtra and Vidarbha at higher atmospheric levels. A cyclonic circulation associated with this system is also supporting cloud formation and rainfall over parts of Maharashtra.
While several parts of Maharashtra are expected to receive moderate to heavy rain, rainfall in Pune city is likely to remain relatively limited over the next few days.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast generally cloudy conditions with very light to light rain in Pune from Thursday to Saturday. Isolated heavy rainfall is possible in the Western Ghats.
The Western Ghats and Konkan are under a yellow alert on Friday, while on Sunday the warning is expected to remain limited to the Ghats.
Weather warnings across most parts of Maharashtra are likely to reduce after Sunday, indicating a gradual decline in rainfall activity from next week.
The recent increase in rainfall has also been linked to a system that developed over the Bay of Bengal. The system has strengthened the southwest monsoon winds, supporting rainfall over the Ghats and Konkan.
Meteorological conditions suggest that the monsoon winds are present over Maharashtra, but their overall strength remains relatively weak.
There is still a possibility of another spell of rainfall during the remaining part of August. The low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal could strengthen the westerly monsoon winds over the Arabian Sea. If these winds shift further towards the south and northwest, rainfall activity could increase over Maharashtra during the final week of August.
However, this remains dependent on how the atmospheric systems develop. A clearer picture will emerge after further weather observations over the coming days.
