Pune: Baramati’s Agricultural Development Trust (ADT) has revolutionized farming practices by integrating artificial intelligence (AI) to boost agricultural productivity at reduced costs. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, during his three-day visit to India, reviewed the progress of the “Farm of the Future” project and expressed optimism that the initiative would significantly benefit small-scale farmers across India.
Leveraging AI for Sustainable Agriculture
Under the project, AI-powered tools have been deployed to assist 1,000 farmers in sugarcane farming. Demonstration plots showcase how satellite data, mobile apps, and advanced analytics help reduce input costs while increasing yields. Nadella reviewed the research outcomes and interacted with participating farmers to understand the technology’s practical impact.
Insights from Women Farmers
During his visit, Nadella spoke with Seema Chavan, a farmer using the AI-based app, to learn how it aids in farm management. He praised the practical application of technology in rural farming, highlighting its potential to transform agriculture for smallholder farmers.
Expanding Horizons
Encouraged by the success in sugarcane farming, the project is now applying AI to horticulture. Demonstration plots for AI-assisted fruit farming will be featured at the Baramati agricultural exhibition, aiming to improve productivity for farmers with limited land and resources.

The initiative was spearheaded by Sharad Pawar and supported by trustees like Prataprao Pawar and Dr. Ajit Javkar. Their collective efforts, along with ADT CEO Nilesh Nalawade’s leadership, have brought the vision to life, showcasing how AI can revolutionize agriculture.
Nadella lauded the project, stating, “This initiative reflects how AI can enable sustainable and cost-effective farming, empowering small-scale farmers to achieve better yields and contribute to India’s agricultural economy.”
