Pune: The Pune Airport Authority is set to receive 13 acres of land from the Indian Air Force in February 2025, facilitating a significant expansion of airport facilities.

A detailed plan for this expansion has been finalized, including the construction of a new cargo terminal, additional parking bays, and remote bays for damaged aircraft. The apron area will also be extended to accommodate increased air traffic.

The Defense Department has granted in-principle approval for the transfer, contingent on the completion of two offices, BSO and CWE, which the airport administration is constructing as per the defense department's requirements.

These offices are 80% complete, with final work expected to finish within six weeks. Once handed over, the 13-acre land will be developed to enhance passenger amenities and accommodate approximately 5 acres for a dedicated cargo terminal.

Key Developments

  • New Parking Bays: Five additional parking bays will increase the current count from 10 to 15. These bays are designed to handle large aircraft like Dreamliners, ensuring readiness for future runway extensions.

  • Remote Bays: Three remote bays will be constructed to house damaged aircraft, freeing up the main parking bays for active flights.

  • Cargo Terminal: Around 5 acres will be allocated for a state-of-the-art cargo terminal, boosting the airport's freight-handling capacity.

Impact on Air Traffic

Currently, Pune Airport handles an average of 97 flights daily with 10 parking bays. The addition of five new bays is expected to accommodate an increase of 20-30 aircraft daily, significantly enhancing the airport's operational capacity. This expansion will not only support higher flight frequencies but also cater to a growing number of passengers.

Santosh Dhoke, Director of Pune Airport, stated, “Once the land transfer is complete, construction of the parking and remote bays will begin immediately. These upgrades are vital for the airport's growth and will position Pune Airport as a hub for larger aircraft operations in the future.”
