Pune: A courageous decision by the family of a 68-year-old man from Pune, declared brain dead at Manipal Hospital, Baner, has given a new lease of life to a liver disease patient.
The man, identified as Tibra Kumar Baruah, was a chronic kidney disease patient receiving treatment at Manipal Hospital. On January 1, he was rushed to the hospital after a sudden loss of consciousness. A CT scan revealed a severe brain hemorrhage that caused irreversible damage to the brain. Despite 24 hours of intensive care, his condition deteriorated, and he was declared brain dead following two sets of mandatory tests.
A Brave and Generous Decision
The Critical Care and Neurosurgery teams, along with the hospital’s Transplant Coordinator, approached the family with the option of organ donation. Having experienced the waiting list for a kidney transplant, the family deeply understood the significance of organ donation and consented to donate the liver.
Due to the patient’s age, only the liver was deemed suitable for transplantation. Following the family’s consent, the Zonal Transplant Coordination Centre (ZTCC) was promptly informed, and the liver was allocated to a 54-year-old male patient at Sahyadri Hospital, Pune.
A Life-Saving Gift
Dr. Bhushan Nagarkar, Consultant and Head of Critical Care at Manipal Hospital, Baner, praised the family’s decision, stating, “Their generosity in such a difficult time is commendable and serves as an inspiration for others. The liver was successfully transplanted, offering a new chance at life for the recipient.”
Dr. Shrey Shah, Consultant Neurosurgery, noted, “While we couldn’t save the donor’s life due to severe brain hemorrhage, their act of organ donation carries immense power to bring hope and healing to others.”
Anand Mote, Cluster Director of Manipal Hospital, added, “The family’s selflessness has profoundly impacted another life. Organ donation is a gift of life that offers hope to those in need, and we encourage more families to consider this noble act.”
