Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) will install 77,000 water meters in one month under the Equal Water Supply Scheme.
Legal action will be taken against residents who obstruct meter installation, as PMC pushes to reduce water wastage and ensure fair supply.
Over 1.85 lakh meters are already installed; remaining work is being done by five contractors under strict deadlines.
Pune, 2nd August 2025: In a bid to ensure fair and efficient water distribution, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has stepped up its water meter installation drive across the city. As part of the ongoing Equal Water Supply Scheme, the civic body has announced a target of installing 77,000 water meters within the next month.
Facing resistance from a section of residents, PMC has issued a warning that any obstruction to the installation process will be dealt with strictly. Individuals found interfering with government work may face legal action under Section 353 of the Indian Penal Code. The civic body has urged citizens to cooperate with the initiative, which aims to regulate supply, reduce wastage, and ensure equitable water distribution.
This move follows a recent review meeting chaired by Maharashtra Water Resources Minister Radhakrishna Vikhe Patil. He directed PMC to urgently tackle the issue of water leakage and speed up work on the scheme.
To meet these targets, PMC has engaged five contractors, each responsible for installing 15,000 meters within a month. According to Nandkishore Jagtap, Head of the Water Supply Department, the civic body has already completed installation of 1.85 lakh meters across the city.
The Equal Water Supply Scheme includes construction of 83 water tanks and over 1,000 km of new pipeline. Work on more than 65 tanks has been completed, though some pipeline construction is still underway due to on-ground challenges.
Initially, PMC planned to install 3.25 lakh meters based on property tax records. The number was later revised to 2.90 lakh and, after a fresh consumer survey, finalized at 2.63 lakh with a 5% buffer. The scheme covers both residential and commercial properties to bring all consumers under a metered and monitored water supply system.
With the final phase now underway, PMC is determined to complete the remaining installations swiftly while ensuring strict enforcement to avoid delays.
