In Pune’s Karvenagar and Warje areas, rickshaw drivers frequently block bus stops, causing inconvenience to commuters, especially students, women, and senior citizens.
Despite designated rickshaw stands nearby, many drivers park directly in front of bus stops, leading to traffic congestion, disputes, and occasional accidents.
Residents and commuters have repeatedly demanded stricter police action, though authorities claim fines and instructions are already being enforced.
Pune, 12 August 2025: In the busy Warje and Karvenagar areas, rickshaw drivers are drawing public ire for parking directly in front of bus stops, blocking buses and inconveniencing passengers. The problem is particularly severe during peak hours, when drivers crowd the stops hoping to pick up fares before buses arrive.
Commuters say this practice makes it difficult for buses to pull in, forcing passengers, especially students, women, and senior citizens, to board in unsafe conditions. In some cases, buses leave without stopping due to the obstruction, delaying passengers and affecting students’ schedules.
Although designated rickshaw stands exist near schools, Ganpati Matha, and the Late Nanasahab Barate flyover, drivers often ignore them and park on the main road. The resulting congestion not only disrupts bus services but also slows traffic, occasionally leading to minor accidents.
Several commuters complain that some drivers behave rudely when asked to move, and disputes sometimes escalate. “When we ask them to take their rickshaw ahead, a group confronts us aggressively. Even fights have broken out,” said a PMPML bus driver.
Residents and passengers say they have filed multiple complaints, but little has changed. “We have to struggle to board the bus because of the rickshaw crowd. Often, by the time we manage, the bus is gone,” a student shared.
Traffic police says action is being taken. “We have instructed drivers to park in designated areas and fined those who violate rules. This drive will continue,” said Warje Traffic Division Senior Inspector Changdev Sajagne.
