Pune: Amid ongoing security concerns at Swargate’s Jedhe Chowk and bus terminal, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated an enforcement drive against illegal food stalls and encroachments. Following complaints of rule violations and public nuisance, municipal officials seized gas cylinders and other unauthorized equipment.

The crackdown comes in the wake of a recent incident at Swargate bus terminal, which has sparked statewide outrage. The episode has exposed several deficiencies, including poor infrastructure, lack of police oversight, and operational lapses within the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC).

Encroachments Causing Traffic and Safety Hazards

Food vendors at Jedhe Chowk, though licensed, have permanently occupied pedestrian pathways, forcing pedestrians to walk on busy roads. The area sees heavy vehicle movement, particularly along Solapur Road towards Katraj, further worsening congestion.

The sharp turn at this intersection makes it difficult for pedestrians to cross safely, and poor visibility poses challenges for vehicle operators, especially PMPML and MSRTC bus drivers. Authorities have identified these encroachments as a major safety risk for both motorists and pedestrians.

Alcohol Consumption and Public Nuisance

Authorities have also observed a growing issue of alcohol and drug consumption under the flyover and along the roadside. Intoxicated individuals frequently visit the food stalls for meals, often creating disturbances. Similar issues have been noted within the bus terminal premises as well.

Municipal Action and Seizures

In response, the PMC’s Bibwewadi Regional Office carried out an operation today, targeting vendors who had exceeded their permitted space by setting up unauthorized sheds, counters, tables, and chairs. Since cooking on public roads is prohibited, several gas cylinders were also seized.

Bus Terminal Congestion Worsened by Illegal Stalls

Encroachments at the entrance of the Swargate bus terminal are further complicating traffic movement. Food stalls and parked autorickshaws block the entry and exit points, making it difficult for buses to maneuver. As a result, buses are often forced to line up along the main road, leading to severe traffic congestion.

“Earlier, fines were imposed on violators, but today’s action revealed highly unhygienic conditions. Unauthorized counters, chairs, and gas cylinders occupying excessive space were confiscated.”
