Pune: In a shocking incident, a 50-year-old woman was deceived by two individuals who claimed to be agents of a prominent official from Punjab distributing free money and ration.
The woman was persuaded to part with her jewelry worth ₹45,000 under the pretense of needing to appear poor to qualify for the benefits. The conmen disappeared after taking the jewelry, promising to return shortly.
The incident occurred at around 1:30 PM on November 16 near the Swargate area. The complainant, Rekha Mahajan, a resident of Ambegaon Pathar, was walking from Nakoda Travels’ office to meet relatives in Parvati village.
According to the police, the conmen intercepted Mahajan, engaged her in conversation, and claimed that a senior official from Punjab was offering free money and ration to the underprivileged. They explained that appearing poor was a prerequisite to receive the benefits.
Believing their story, Mahajan handed over her jewelry to them, thinking she would get it back after receiving the promised money.
The conmen assured her they would return with the "official" but fled the scene instead. Realizing she had been duped, Mahajan lodged a complaint at the Swargate Police Station.
The police have launched an investigation into the case. Constable Nana Bhandurge is leading the inquiry to identify and apprehend the culprits.
