Pune, 29th September 2026: Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis has given in-principle approval to a ₹1,400 crore infrastructure development plan for Chakan and a separate ₹426 crore plan to ease traffic congestion in Hinjawadi. The proposals were presented at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Mumbai on Monday.
Minister of State for Urban Development Madhuri Misal, Chief Secretary Rajesh Agrawal and other senior officials attended the meeting. Pune District Collector Jitendra Dudi presented the plans.
The proposed plan for Chakan focuses on improving roads, drainage, traffic management and basic infrastructure in the industrial area, where waterlogging during the monsoon and traffic congestion remain major concerns.
The plan includes:
Clearing natural drains and removing encroachments.
Developing 38 km of roadside stormwater drainage.
Upgrading culverts and bridges to improve water flow.
Building additional water storage facilities at suitable locations.
Improving road safety and pedestrian infrastructure.
A study of 498 km of roads has been completed, considering traffic density, industrial importance, goods movement, road conditions, waterlogging, safety and connectivity. In the first phase, around 75 km of roads will be upgraded, with provisions for pedestrian pathways, stormwater drainage and improved traffic facilities.
To reduce dependence on private vehicles and ease congestion, a public transport plan has been proposed for workers travelling to Chakan from Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad. Around 500 additional buses are planned on different routes to improve connectivity.
The Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) will also provide parking facilities at five locations in the Chakan industrial area to help manage vehicle movement.
The industrial area's water supply project is scheduled for completion in 2027. A proposal has also been made to transfer the water supply scheme currently operated by the Chakan Industries Association to the Maharashtra Jeevan Pradhikaran (MJP).
For electricity infrastructure, MIDC has provided the required land, and construction of a 100 MVA power substation is scheduled to begin in December. A centralised solid waste processing facility is also planned. Tenders have been prepared to process waste generated in 14 villages and two municipal councils.
A separate ₹426 crore plan has been prepared to address traffic congestion in Hinjawadi, one of Pune's major IT hubs. The proposal includes measures to improve traffic management and strengthen supporting infrastructure.
Six acres of land have been made available to address electricity supply issues in the area. The process of deploying 100 Maharashtra Security Force personnel for traffic management is also underway.
Waste collection in Hinjawadi is expected to begin through either the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) or the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC), as part of efforts to improve waste management in the area.
The proposed measures aim to improve road connectivity, public transport, drainage and essential services in both Chakan and Hinjawadi, which experience heavy daily traffic due to their industrial and commercial activities.
