Pune, 14th May 2026: Responding to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for fuel conservation amid fears of a possible fuel supply crisis in the country, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has decided to reduce the use of its vehicles by nearly 30 percent.
PMC Commissioner Naval Kishore Ram said the civic administration has started preparing a roadmap to cut fuel consumption and reduce expenses on petrol and diesel.
“Following the Prime Minister’s appeal, PMC will reduce vehicle usage by up to 30 percent to save fuel. Instructions have been given to prepare a proper roadmap for implementing these measures,” he said.
The civic administration is planning to encourage officers and employees to use Metro services, PMPML buses and carpooling instead of individual vehicles. Officials living in the same area may be asked to share cars while those residing near Metro routes will be encouraged to use public transport regularly.
PMC currently has a fleet of 1,342 vehicles, including 205 cars, which are used by senior civic officials and elected representatives. The administration is also planning to reduce unnecessary fuel usage at civic project sites by supplying fuel directly to machinery such as JCBs and Poklen machines at work locations instead of sending them to petrol pumps.
Mayor Manjusha Nagpure has suggested that PMC officials, employees and elected representatives observe a 'Public Transport Day' once every week. She said using public transport would also help the administration understand the difficulties faced by daily commuters.
“If civic officials, employees and public representatives use Metro, PMPML buses and other public transport systems, it will send a positive message to citizens. It will also help the administration understand commuters’ problems better,” Nagpure said.
As part of the fuel-saving drive, Nagpure has also decided to give up one of her two official vehicles. Earlier, separate vehicles were used for the mayor and her staff. The second vehicle arrangement has now been discontinued to reduce fuel consumption and administrative expenses.
