
Pune, 4th September 2025: Bharatkumar Baviskar, the Superintendent Engineer of the Public Works Department, has called on all relevant departments to enhance their efforts in decreasing road accident fatalities throughout Pune district. He highlighted the importance of conducting thorough analyses of accident-prone locations, known as 'blackspots,' and applying suitable preventive strategies.
The announcement was made during a District Road Safety Committee session held at the District Collector's Office, under the supervision of District Collector Jitendra Dudi. During the evaluation of the district's accident data, Baviskar highlighted that over 900 fatalities happen each year. He emphasized the importance of conducting surveys on hazardous locations and the necessity for all departments to work together.
On June 23, 2025, District Collector Dudi suggested that the Regional Transport Department had carried out a survey of accident-prone areas and proposed solutions that now need to be implemented promptly. Baviskar also emphasized that the police and transport departments should concentrate on regions experiencing rising traffic, especially Hinjewadi and Chakan.
Specific directives were given to improve road safety ahead of the 'Pune Grand Challenge Tour', an international cycling event set for January 2026. In the meeting, Archana Gaikwad, Sandesh Chavan, and Surendra Nikam provided updates on the blackspot surveys and proposed solutions.
Sanjay Kadam assessed the highway safety measures, as members of the Save Life Foundation delivered a report concerning the Baramati city accident on July 27th and the subsequent actions taken.
The attendees comprised Executive Engineer Milind Barbhai, Anuradha Bhandare, Pune Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad, Pimpri-Chinchwad RTO Sandesh Chavan, Baramati Sub-Regional Transport Officer Surendra Nikam, Project Director of the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) Sanjay Kadam, officers from the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation, and representatives from several social organizations.
