Pune, 7th September 2026: Preparatory work for the Ramwadi–Wagholi Metro extension has begun, with barricading being installed near the Ramwadi Metro station on Nagar Road. The move comes ahead of geotechnical investigations and soil testing for the proposed corridor.
The extension will be built as a double-decker elevated transport structure, with the Metro viaduct on the upper level and a six-lane elevated road below it. The combined structure is planned along the busy Nagar Road corridor.
The first phase will cover around 4.7 km from Ramwadi to Tuljabhavani Chowk and will include four stations:
Vimannagar
Somnathnagar
Kharadi Bypass
Tuljabhavani Chowk
Maha Metro officials said geotechnical surveys and soil investigations are expected to begin within the next few days. Construction work will follow after the necessary investigations.
The tendering process to appoint an agency for constructing the elevated road and Metro viaduct began around four months ago.
Metro services currently end at Ramwadi. The extension will begin just ahead of the existing station and largely follow the Nagar Road alignment. A major portion of the proposed viaduct is expected to be built above the existing road.
The start of preparatory work has raised concerns among regular Nagar Road commuters. They fear that expanding barricading and construction activity could reduce road space and add to existing congestion.
Commuters said traffic between Yerawada and Wagholi is already affected by wrong-side driving, congestion at major junctions and bottlenecks near U-turns. They have urged authorities to introduce traffic diversions and management measures before major construction begins.
Residents and daily travellers said traffic planning should progress alongside the Metro project to prevent further congestion on one of Pune's busiest eastern corridors.
