Pune, 7th October 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has set October 31 as the deadline for all road-digging work along the 136-km route planned for the Pune Grand Tour international cycling event in January. No new road excavation will be permitted on the designated route after the deadline.
Several stretches along the cycling route have already been dug up for laying or repairing water supply and sewage pipelines, MNG-L, electricity infrastructure, ITMS facilities and CCTV systems. The PMC has directed all concerned agencies and utility companies to complete their excavation and related work within the deadline.
A meeting was held at the PMC on October 6 to review the preparations. City Engineer Aniruddha Pawaskar, Additional Police Commissioner Manoj Patil, Chief Road Engineer Rajesh Bankar, officials from various civic departments and representatives of utility companies attended the meeting.
The 136-km cycling route is being developed in four packages to meet international standards. The work includes construction of some new roads and repairs to around 52 km of existing roads.
The ongoing work includes:
Resurfacing of roads
Bringing manholes to road level
Repairing and constructing footpaths
Repairing and beautifying road dividers
The PMC has also instructed agencies to avoid any new utility-related excavation on the route after October 31 so that the repaired roads remain ready for the event.
Around 200 to 225 speed breakers along the 136-km route will be temporarily removed to provide cyclists with a smoother and uninterrupted track during the competition.
The speed breakers will be restored immediately after the event to reduce the risk of accidents for regular road users.
The PMC will use VG-40 grade bitumen instead of the traditionally used VG-30 for this year's road works. According to Pawaskar, the higher-grade material is expected to improve road quality and durability.
The civic body is aiming to complete the road-related works in time for the Pune Grand Tour while ensuring that utility agencies finish their pending excavation before the October 31 deadline.
