Pune, 20th May 2026: In a tragic incident from Sinhagad Road a 7-year-old boy lost his life after allegedly getting trapped inside a lift at a residential housing society late on Tuesday night.
The deceased has been identified as Shivansh Shailesh Dhut. The incident took place at Riddhi Siddhi Apartment in Nimbajinagar around 10 pm when the child was playing within the society premises, as he usually did.
According to police, Shivansh reportedly entered the lift alone and pressed one of the buttons. The lift started moving but suddenly stopped midway before reaching the second floor, leaving the child trapped inside for nearly one-and-a-half hours.
When Shivansh did not return home for a long time, his family members and residents of the society began searching for him across the premises. During the search, residents suspected that the lift may have malfunctioned and informed the police and fire brigade around 11.30 pm.
A rescue team from the fire department, along with officers from Sinhagad Road Police Station, reached the spot and managed to open the stalled lift after considerable effort. However, the child was found unconscious inside the cabin.
Police suspect that Shivansh may have died after remaining trapped in the enclosed lift for a prolonged period. However, officials said the exact cause of death will be confirmed only after the postmortem report is received.
Initial investigation has not revealed any major technical fault in the lift so far. Police added that responsibility for lift maintenance rests with the housing society management. An accidental death report has been registered and further investigation is underway.
