Pune, 6th March 2026: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has initiated steps toward exploring a new metro corridor connecting Wakad, Katraj and Shewalewadi.

The civic body has written to MahaMetro seeking a preliminary assessment to determine whether the proposed route can be included in Pune’s Comprehensive Mobility Plan.

The proposed corridor aims to connect the western and southern parts of the city while running along the busy Katraj–Dehu Road Bypass. This stretch currently experiences heavy traffic from both heavy and light vehicles.

Rapid residential development along the highway has also increased travel demand, prompting local representatives to push for a metro line in the area.

MahaMetro had earlier communicated with the PMC regarding the proposal. In response, the civic administration said the necessity and feasibility of the corridor must first be examined before taking the project forward.

As part of Pune’s broader mobility strategy, the study will evaluate multiple factors including potential passenger numbers, estimated project cost, technical challenges, land acquisition needs and the project’s impact on reducing traffic congestion.

If the preliminary assessment yields positive results, the next stage will involve site inspections, traffic counts, technical surveys and preparation of a detailed alignment plan. This will eventually lead to the preparation of a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for the metro corridor.

The need for the project is driven by rapid urban growth in the region. Wakad has emerged as a major IT hub, Katraj has seen expanding residential settlements, while new housing projects are coming up in Shewalewadi. A metro link between these areas could significantly improve connectivity and help reduce congestion across key city roads.

Commenting on the proposal, PMC Chief Engineer (Projects) Dinkar Gojare said, “The proposed corridor must first be examined in detail to understand its necessity and feasibility. Only after this evaluation will further steps such as surveys and preparation of the project report be considered.”
