As the push for AI-powered devices accelerates, Apple is said to be working on a wearable pin that could arrive by 2027. The gadget, designed to attach to clothing, is expected to house cameras, microphones and a speaker, and may integrate with a revamped Siri.
Apple is reportedly developing an AI-powered wearable pin, according to a report from The Information. To compete with leading AI players like OpenAI, Apple is working on releasing it sometime in 2027. The device is described as a small, thin, circular disc roughly the size of an AirTag but slightly thicker, featuring an aluminum-and-glass shell. It would attach to clothing like a pin.
OpenAI is expected to launch its first AI hardware, possibly earbuds, in late 2026, fueling speculation that Apple is racing to enter the AI wearables market alongside Meta and others. The report also notes parallels with the short-lived Humane AI Pin, which failed due to poor performance, limited features, privacy concerns, and low sales before shutting down.
The AI pin is reported to include:
Two cameras (a standard lens and a wide-angle lens) for capturing photos and videos.
Three microphones to capture audio.
A built-in speaker for voice responses and audio output.
A physical button for user control.
A magnetic charging strip on the back, similar to the charging systems used by Fitbit or Apple Watch.
The device is still in early development, but the report suggests Apple may be accelerating its timeline, with a potential launch as early as 2027. Initial plans reportedly call for producing around 20 million units for the first release.
Apple's pin is anticipated to be part of the company's upcoming revamp of Siri, turning it into a more sophisticated, ChatGPT-like conversational AI, partially utilizing Google's Gemini model due to a recent collaboration. As with all initial hardware development stages, specifics are still tentative, and the project may undergo changes or be discontinued in the future.
