It seems that the hospital administration and patients’ relative cannot be on one page. A resident of Bhekrainagar who suffered from Guillain Barre Syndrome (GBS) and admitted to a private hospital had to dole out Rs four lakh towards the treatment.

Despite a standing order by Pune Municipal Corporation to give concession to the patients suffering from GBS, the private hospital in Dattawadi simply ignored the directions and asked the patient to pay Rs four lakhs towards the treatment.

“My brother was admitted to a private hospital for GBS. After 14 days of the treatment when he was fine to go home, the hospital gave us a bill of Rs 4.25 lakh. We told them about the PMC direction, even showed them the letter, yet, they chose to ignore it”, Sunil Shirsat, brother of the patient Vivek Shirsat.

Meanwhile, Sunil has lodged a complaint with the health department of PMC regarding it. In the complaint he mentioned that his brother was admitted to a private hospital on January 22 for GBS. He had an insurance of Rs three lakh. The hospital conducted MRI of the patient thrice and gave a bill of Rs24,000.

It took more than two days for the insurance company to send the approval. Meanwhile the patient was administered ‘Immunoglobulin’, treatment. One immunoglobulin bottle was priced at Rs 20, 700. A total bill of it was Rs2.80 lakh”, said Sunil.

In the meantime, we had paid Rs89,000 for some or the other tests at the hospital from our pocket other than the insurance scheme”, he informed adding that the total bill was of Rs4.23 lakh. We have lodged the complaint with the health department of PMC”, he said.
