Address, not ignore, your problems

Vinaya Patil

Say the cast of upcoming Marathi movie Mala Kahich Problem Nahi which releases on August 11 and revolves around the small problems of our busy lives.

While saying we have no problems, we only hide our problems instead of addressing them, and this is what “this film speaks about”, say the lead pair of upcoming Marathi movie Mala Kahich Problem Nahi (I have no problem at all). Actors Spruha Joshi and Gashmeer Mahajani, who visited the Sakal Times office recently, spoke about the feel-good movie and the simple message it tries to convey.

Directed by Sameer Vidwans, Mala Kahich Problem Nahi hits the theatres on August 11. ‘No problem’ is one phrase we hear way too often, but it is more often than not, false. It’s just our way of brushing small problems under the carpet. “These small problems then become large and we are left in a place from where there’s no going back,” says Spruha, adding, “The better thing to do instead is to tell your loved ones what the problem is and sort it out. The movie tells you exactly this.”

The movie also stars Nirmiti Sawant, Vijay Nikam, Satish Alekar, Seema Deshmukh and Karan Bhosle among others. Songs penned by the famous Guru Thakur and Vaibhav Joshi, have been directed and sung by the Hrishikesh-Saurabh-Jasraj trio. “The music can only be described as soulful and catchy,” says Spruha, to which Gashmeer completely agrees. “We have already heard the songs so many times, but are still not bored. They are here to stay,” he says.

The two youngsters, played by Spruha and Gashmeer, belong to the Konkan and Vidarbha regions of Maharashtra in the film, and this adds a fun element to the narration, with the two different cultures and linguistic backgrounds that the families come from.

The couple, much against their parents’ wishes, gets married to each other, but what follows is a busy life, full of professional ambitions and hardships, and barely any time for enjoying the simple pleasures of life.

“There is a scene in the movie where Spruha’s character is talking to her mom, telling her of some of the problems between us, to which her mother replies saying, ‘these are not problems at all, according to us’. So the movie looks at issues from every generation’s point of view,” says Gashmeer. Our generation’s priorities are all over the place, and hence these issues arise, he says.

How is it different from other movies of the same genre? “It doesn’t talk only about the youth. It takes a general view of relations and emotions. The movie urges us to restart our simple conversations with our loved ones,” answers Gashmeer.

Ask him about the director in him, and Gashmeer says that while he has directed a number of plays and even a movie, he does not look at it as a hindrance to the actor in him. “I believe that actors collaborate with a director and not interfere with his working,” he insists. “I believe it is any day an advantage to have knowledge about every aspect of filmmaking or theatre, instead of simply sticking to acting or directing. Together, everything makes for a good combination,” he adds.

Spruha, on the other hand, has an experience of working across mediums — television, theatre and films. “Working across mediums only helps me as an actor. I enjoy doing all three equally and I believe all of them pose different challenges. So I get to learn everywhere, while generating an audience base with every medium,” she says.

Coming back to their film, the two actors tell us that it is a film that each of us can relate to and will help us look at life in a much simpler and healthier way, encouraging us to solve our problems instead of ignoring them.
