Alpha has been in the spotlight since its theatrical release on July 3, and Karan Johar has now weighed in on the film. The spy thriller, a new addition to the expanding YRF Spy Universe, features Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in leading roles. The movie has drawn a mixed reception from both audiences and critics. While its action sequences and performances have been widely praised, some viewers have expressed reservations about the narrative. In the midst of this ongoing debate, Karan Johar has voiced his opinion, firmly backing the film and its leading star.
Karan Johar reviews Alpha
Sharing his views on Instagram Stories, Karan Johar described Alpha as a “strong opening” at a time when cinemas are still finding it difficult to attract viewers. He remarked, “When drawing audiences to theatres is a challenge, ALPHA manages a robust start! It highlights several things…the audience rises above online negativity and they are the real warriors…”
He also commended Alia Bhatt’s performance, emphasizing her “stardom and theatrical pull” as well as her “unquestionable talent,” noting that both are clearly evident in the film. He further stated that Alia Bhatt’s star power, box-office appeal, and undeniable talent, along with the impact of a grand big-screen spectacle, are beyond dispute, and that YRF’s ongoing franchise and its effort to deliver major theatrical tentpole experiences deserve our applause rather than any negativity.
Concluding on an upbeat note, he encouraged people to disengage from online negativity and simply enjoy films. “Please unwind and celebrate that cinemas are alive again! Go watch Alpha and quit doomscrolling!” he wrote.
About Alpha
Alpha introduces the first female-driven installment in the YRF Spy Universe, featuring Alia Bhatt and Sharvari in the lead roles as elite agents Sita and Durga. Directed by Shiv Rawail and produced by Aditya Chopra, the film centers on two estranged women who are brought back together as they unravel the mystery behind the secretive “Operation Odyssey” and confront a formidable enemy.
The movie features Anil Kapoor as RAW Chief Vikrant Kaul, and includes a special appearance by Hrithik Roshan as Major Kabir, further strengthening the growing spy universe. Bobby Deol also appears in the film as the primary antagonist. Alpha registered a decent opening. The film earned ₹9.25 crore on day 1 from 7,534 shows.
A section of the Hindustan Times review stated that Alpha is neither the catastrophe critics had anticipated nor the fresh reinvention the SpyVerse required after the letdown of War 2. It is a technically well-crafted yet emotionally flat film that offers only a handful of high points mostly thanks to Hrithik Roshan and never discovers a truly compelling rhythm of its own. At times, that can be more disheartening than watching a plainly bad movie.
