Guru Poornima 2025: A Day to Honour Those Who Light the Path

In a world where knowledge is often a Google search away, Guru Poornima reminds us that wisdom still lives in relationships—in quiet guidance, everyday mentorship, and the people who show us how to see, not just what to think.

What Is Guru Poornima?

Observed on the full moon day (Poornima) in the Hindu month of Ashadha (June–July), Guru Poornima is a day dedicated to honoring gurus or teachers—not only spiritual masters, but also academic mentors, life coaches, parents, and anyone who’s shaped our growth.

It is rooted in the Sanskrit word “guru”, meaning the one who dispels darkness (gu = darkness, ru = remover).

Historically, the day commemorates:

  • The birth of Sage Vyasa, who authored the Mahabharata and compiled the Vedas.

  • A traditional time when seekers would visit their gurus in ashrams, marking the beginning of the chaturmas (four-month monsoon retreat for monks and spiritual practitioners).

Traditions Then & Now

Traditional Observances

  • Spiritual rituals and satsangs held in ashrams and temples.

  • Disciples offering gifts, dakshina (offerings), or seva (service) to gurus.

  • Silent reflection and fasting, symbolizing respect and purity of intention.

Modern Interpretations

Today, Guru Poornima has found meaning in many new forms:

  • Students send thank-you notes to teachers or mentors.

  • Yoga practitioners gather for special community sessions or meditations.

  • Online spiritual communities host digital discourses and live satsangs.

  • Parents are acknowledged as first gurus, especially in family celebrations.

In workplaces, some even take time to acknowledge professional mentors—those who guided them through difficult career turns or inspired growth beyond job roles.

In an age of distraction, instant advice, and performative “wellness,” Guru Poornima reminds us of the depth that comes from guidance given with intention. A true guru doesn’t just give answers—they change the questions you ask.
