Pune: The National Commission for Women (NCW) has launched the nationwide initiative ‘Mahila Aayog Aaplya Daari’ (Women’s Commission at Your Doorstep) to address the growing number of complaints related to violence and family disputes. NCW Chairperson Vijaya Rahatkar announced the initiative while inaugurating the two-day state-level ‘Abhaya’ conference in Pune.

“There has been a significant rise in complaints of violence against women across the country, with lakhs of cases currently pending before state and national commissions as well as family courts. Nearly 50-60% of these complaints are related to family disputes. To expedite their resolution, the NCW has introduced the ‘Mahila Aayog Aaplya Daari’ campaign, which addresses grievances through regional hearings,” Rahatkar stated.

She further emphasized the need to recognize and integrate single women into society, advocating for the ‘Abhaya’ movement to receive formal government acknowledgment, similar to the recognition granted to differently-abled individuals.

State-Level ‘Abhaya’ Conference Held in Pune

The ‘Abhaya’ conference, organized by Vanchit Vikas and Udaykaal Foundation at Nihar Anand Nivas in Lohgaon, saw participation from 50 social organizations working for single women across Maharashtra.

Rahatkar highlighted the social challenges faced by women, particularly in the evolving family structure. “The joint family system once provided stability, but with the rise of nuclear families, women are increasingly experiencing isolation. Despite managing both careers and households, they often struggle for dignity and rights. While legal protections exist, incidents of violence persist, indicating the need for a more sensitive and supportive society,” she noted.

She stressed the importance of shifting the societal perception of single women. “Instead of labeling them as ‘single women,’ we should call them ‘Abhaya’ (fearless) and work towards their seamless integration into society,” she said.

Rahatkar assured that the NCW is preparing recommendations for the holistic development of ‘Abhaya’ women, which will be submitted to the central government. The commission also plans to expand the ‘Abhaya’ movement across other states.
