Pune: A case of alcohol consumption and smoking in a girls' hostel at Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) has surfaced, leading to disciplinary action against the involved students. The incident was brought to light after a female student filed a complaint against her roommates, citing mental harassment and administrative inaction.

According to reports, the incident occurred in February 2025, when a student residing in a four-person hostel room found that three of her roommates regularly consumed alcohol and smoked inside the premises. Feeling uncomfortable and distressed, she initially reported the matter to the hostel administration and the registrar, but no strict action was taken at the time.

Subsequently, she escalated her complaint to the Vice-Chancellor, submitting a formal letter detailing her grievances. In her complaint, she alleged that her roommates had threatened her and that their behavior was adversely affecting her academic performance.

University Response and Action Taken

Following the complaint, the university administration conducted an inquiry and found empty alcohol bottles and cigarette packets in the hostel room. Taking disciplinary measures, the students involved were issued strict warnings and subjected to counseling to address their behavior.

As part of the action taken, the complainant was relocated to a different hostel building to ensure her well-being. Additionally, the department heads were informed, and the parents of the involved students were notified about the matter.

The university has assured that strict action will be taken in such cases to maintain discipline and a conducive academic environment in hostel premises. The administration has also reiterated its commitment to upholding hostel regulations and ensuring the safety and well-being of all students.
