Pune: With the onset of summer, the rising temperatures in Pune have begun affecting wildlife at Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, Katraj. To safeguard animals from the extreme heat, the zoo administration has taken special measures such as installing cooling equipment, modifying diets, and increasing water supply within enclosures.
In response to the increasing temperatures, rain guns, coolers, and fans have been installed in animal enclosures to maintain a comfortable environment. Herbivorous animals are being provided with fresh green fodder and seasonal fruits, while electrolyte-enhanced water is being administered to prevent dehydration.
Larger animals, especially elephants, are being bathed multiple times a day, and water is being regularly sprayed inside enclosures and moats to help regulate temperatures. To maintain a cool and natural habitat, additional watering of greenery and trees within the zoo premises is also being carried out.
Dr. Rajkumar Jadhav, Director of Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park, assured that all necessary precautions are being taken:
"With rising temperatures, we are implementing measures to keep the enclosures cool and ensure proper hydration for all animals. Regular health check-ups, a balanced diet, and temperature control within enclosures are being closely monitored. All animals are currently in good health."
Visitors at the zoo have also appreciated these efforts. Rajshree Chavan, a tourist, expressed her satisfaction, stating:
"The zoo houses an amazing variety of animals, and it’s reassuring to see them being well taken care of. They bring us so much happiness, and it’s heartwarming to know that their well-being is a priority."
Spread across 130 acres, the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park is home to 427 animals, including lions, tigers, leopards, wolves, jackals, bears, elephants, blackbucks, deer, sambars, monkeys, crocodiles, and various snake species. The zoo also features a lake and a rich variety of flora, ensuring a natural and sustainable habitat for its inhabitants.
