Pune: Over the past few months, the Baner-Balewadi area of Pune has seen a significant increase in the stray dog population, causing problems for local residents. The dogs have been chasing two-wheeler riders, leading to frequent accidents, and creating fear among pedestrians, particularly those on morning walks.
The problem has been exacerbated by residents dumping household waste on the streets, providing easy food sources for the stray dogs. This has resulted in the dogs forming groups and occupying roadside areas. Their sudden movements, especially during fights, have led to panic situations for pedestrians and riders.
In several cases, two-wheeler riders have reported accidents after being chased by stray dogs. Pedestrians, too, are increasingly concerned about dog bites, with some taking the precaution of carrying sticks while walking outdoors.
Mrunal Devre, Resident of Vinayak Residency, Baner said, "Two weeks ago, while returning home from my class on Pan Card Road in Baner, I was chased by dogs and fell off my bike. I sustained multiple injuries in the accident. Even outside our society, there is a large number of stray dogs, and passing through the area is frightening. Immediate action is necessary to address this issue."
Dr. Sarika Funde Bhosale, Chief Veterinary Officer stated, "As per the regulations of the Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules, 2023, stray dogs are captured, sterilized, and vaccinated. In areas with a high stray dog population, we will send a team to catch them. After conducting sterilization procedures, the dogs will be released back into the same area."
