A scenic hot air balloon excursion ended in tragedy in southern Brazil on Saturday when a fire ignited mid-flight, killing eight people and plunging the nation into mourning. Local officials reported that 21 individuals were on board at the time of the incident. Thirteen people, including the pilot, survived and were rescued. Emergency crews quickly responded to the site, and the survivors were taken to nearby hospitals for medical treatment and assessment.

Fire reportedly started inside the basket

Investigators are concentrating on accounts that a fire ignited inside the balloon’s basket mid-flight. The pilot, who survived the incident, is said to have tried an emergency descent upon detecting the flames.

As the balloon neared the ground, passengers were instructed to jump to safety. Several managed to escape, but others remained on board as the fire intensified. Officials said the balloon then became lighter after some passengers exited, causing it to rise again before eventually losing lift and crashing.

“The pilot tried to bring the balloon down as quickly as possible,” a police official said. “Unfortunately, not everyone was able to leave before the situation worsened.”

Victims identified, nation mourns

The victims included two married couples, a mother and her daughter, an eye specialist, and a professional figure skater. Officials stated that every passenger has been identified and there are no individuals still unaccounted for.

Santa Catarina Governor Jorginho Mello called the event a “tragedy” and vowed a thorough investigation into what caused the crash. Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva likewise extended his condolences to the victims’ families and pledged assistance to those impacted.

Investigation underway

Brazil’s National Civil Aviation Agency has opened an inquiry to identify the cause of the fire and verify whether all safety protocols were followed. In the meantime, the tour company that organized the flight has halted its operations indefinitely.

In a statement, the company said it had complied with aviation regulations and stressed that the pilot followed established emergency protocols. "We are heartbroken by this loss and stand with the families in this difficult time," the company said.

The crash has refocused scrutiny on safety protocols in Brazil’s expanding hot air balloon tourism sector, as authorities investigate the precise chain of events that led to the fatal incident.
