'CWPRS' in Khadakwasla opens for citizens on Saturday; Opportunity to see water research projects

109 Foundation Day: The 109th anniversary of the Central Water and Power Research Centre in Khadakwasla is being celebrated on June 14

Pune, 11th June 2025: The 109th anniversary of the Central Water and Power Research Centre (CWPRS) at Khadakwasla is on Saturday (14th). On this day, the centre will be open to the general public and students. Citizens will get the opportunity to see models based on various projects here.

CWPRS was established in 1916. It operates under the Ministry of Water Resources, Government of India. Over the past century, it has made significant contributions through basic and applied research in areas such as water resources, hydropower, river engineering, ports and coastal protection.

CWPRS invites all citizens and students to participate in this 'Open House Day' program. Here, one will get first-hand information about the science, research and infrastructure behind water and power projects in the country.

Things In the Exhibition: 

  • Hydraulic Machinery, Cavitation and Instrumentation (HMC) Lab

  • Mumbai Port Study Model

  • Yamuna River Model

  • Sand and Polavaram Project Models

  • CMRT and Mangdechhu Project Models

  • Kalpasar Coastal Reservoir Model

  • Documentary screening on CWPRS

Director of the institute Dr. Prabhat Chandra said in a press conference that , “CWPRS is currently focusing on the efficiency of projects using artificial intelligence and machine learning. Along with this, the institute is conducting research on topics like climate change, salinity intrusion, glacial lake outburst floods. A center of excellence for dam safety will be set up soon.”

Currently, research work is underway on more than 20 dams, both small and large, on the Indus, Chenab and Jhelum rivers. Some of them have been completed and some are in progress, he added.
